Scrape Google Ads in Python

Scrape Google Ads in Python

Shows how to scrape regular and shopping ad results from Google search.

What will be scraped

  1. Google Regular Ads:

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge scraping with CSS selectors

CSS selectors declare which part of the markup a style applies to thus allowing to extract data from matching tags and attributes.

If you haven't scraped with CSS selectors, there's a dedicated blog post of mine about how to use CSS selectors when web-scraping that covers what it is, pros and cons, and why they're matter from a web-scraping perspective.

Separate virtual environment

In short, it's a thing that creates an independent set of installed libraries including different Python versions that can coexist with each other at the same system thus preventing libraries or Python version conflicts.

If you didn't work with a virtual environment before, have a look at the dedicated Python virtual environments tutorial using Virtualenv and Poetry blog post of mine to get familiar.

📌Note: this is not a strict requirement for this blog post.

Install libraries:

pip install requests, parsel, beautifulsoup4, lxml

📌Note: You don't need to install both beautifulsoup4 and parsel. This blog post contains examples using both libraries. Choose the one that you feel more comfortable with.

Reduce the chance of being blocked

There's a chance that a request might be blocked. Have a look at how to reduce the chance of being blocked while web-scraping, there are eleven methods to bypass blocks from most websites.

Google Regular Ad Results

# using beautifulsoup

from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
import requests, lxml, json

params = {
    "q": "coffee beans buy",
    "hl": "en",
    "gl": "us"
}

headers = {
    "User-Agent": "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/98.0.4758.87 Safari/537.36",
}

html = requests.get("https://www.google.com/search?", params=params, headers=headers)
soup = BeautifulSoup(html.text, "lxml")

ad_results = []

for index, ad_result in enumerate(soup.select(".uEierd"), start=1):
    title = ad_result.select_one(".v0nnCb span").text
    website_link = ad_result.select_one("a.sVXRqc")["data-pcu"]
    ad_link = ad_result.select_one("a.sVXRqc")["href"]
    displayed_link = ad_result.select_one(".qzEoUe").text
    tracking_link = ad_result.select_one(".v5yQqb a.sVXRqc")["data-rw"]
    snippet = ad_result.select_one(".MUxGbd div span").text
    phone = None if ad_result.select_one("span.fUamLb span") is None else ad_result.select_one("span.fUamLb span") .text

    inline_link_text = [title.text for title in ad_result.select("div.bOeY0b .XUpIGb a")]
    inline_link = [link["href"] for link in ad_result.select("div.bOeY0b .XUpIGb a")]

    ad_results.append({
        "position": index,
        "title": title,
        "phone": phone,
        "website_link": website_link,
        "displayed_link": displayed_link,
        "ad_link": ad_link,
        "tracking_link": tracking_link,
        "snippet": snippet,
        "sitelinks": [{"titles": inline_link_text, "links": inline_link}]
    })

print(json.dumps(ad_results, indent=2))

Create search query parameters and request headers:

# https://docs.python-requests.org/en/master/user/quickstart/#passing-parameters-in-urls
params = {
    "q": "coffee beans buy",
    "hl": "en",
    "gl": "us"
}

# https://docs.python-requests.org/en/master/user/quickstart/#custom-headers
headers = {
    "User-Agent": "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/98.0.4758.87 Safari/537.36",
}

Make a request, pass headers and search query parameters, create BeautifulSoup() object, pass HTML parser, and temporary list to store extracted data:

html = requests.get("https://www.google.com/search", params=params, headers=headers)
selector = BeautifulSoup(html.text)

ad_results = []

Extract the data and append to the temporary list and print it to see the result:

for index, ad_result in enumerate(soup.select(".uEierd"), start=1):
    title = ad_result.select_one(".v0nnCb span").text
    website_link = ad_result.select_one("a.sVXRqc")["data-pcu"]
    ad_link = ad_result.select_one("a.sVXRqc")["href"]
    displayed_link = ad_result.select_one(".qzEoUe").text
    tracking_link = ad_result.select_one(".v5yQqb a.sVXRqc")["data-rw"]
    snippet = ad_result.select_one(".MUxGbd div span").text
    phone = None if ad_result.select_one("span.fUamLb span") is None else ad_result.select_one("span.fUamLb span") .text

    inline_link_text = [title.text for title in ad_result.select("div.bOeY0b .XUpIGb a")]
    inline_link = [link["href"] for link in ad_result.select("div.bOeY0b .XUpIGb a")]

    ad_results.append({
        "position": index,
        "title": title,
        "phone": phone,
        "website_link": website_link,
        "displayed_link": displayed_link,
        "ad_link": ad_link,
        "tracking_link": tracking_link,
        "snippet": snippet,
        "sitelinks": [{"titles": inline_link_text, "links": inline_link}]
    })

print(json.dumps(ad_results, indent=2))

Output:

  • enumerate() adds counter to an iterable and returns it, and start=1 will start counting from 1, instead from 0.
  • css() will process passed CSS selectors to manipulate XML/HTML document. It's like select() or select_one() beautifulsoup methods.
  • ::text and ::attr(<attribute_name>) is a parsel pseudo-elements which translates to XPath using cssselct under the hood.
  • xpath("normalize-space()") will grab those blank text nodes since /text() will ignore blank text nodes.
  • inline_link_text if statement expression will return None if selector returns a [], otherwise it will return list of matched data. Same goes for extracting attr(href) attribute.
  • getall() wll return a list of matches.

Alternatively, you can do it using Google Ad Results API from SerpApi.

While using API, there's no need to create the parser from scratch, maintain it overtime, figure out how to scale it and how to bypass blocks from search engines. Have a try using SerpApi.

# scrapes both regular and shopping ads (top, right blocks)

from serpapi import GoogleSearch
import json, os

params = {
    "api_key": os.getenv("API_KEY"),
    "engine": "google",
    "q": "buy rtx 3080",
    "gl": "us",
    "hl": "en"
}

search = GoogleSearch(params)
results = search.get_dict()

if results.get("ads", []):
    for ad in results["ads"]:
        print(json.dumps(ad, indent=2))

if results.get("shopping_results", []):
    for shopping_ad in results["shopping_results"]:
        print(json.dumps(shopping_ad, indent=2))
else:
    print("no shopping ads found.")
